EUC Maintenance & Care Guide
Keep your electric unicycle running smoothly for years
Electric unicycles are relatively low-maintenance compared to cars, motorcycles, or even bicycles. But regular care extends the life of your wheel, keeps it safe to ride, and prevents expensive repairs. Here's everything you need to know.
Regular Checks (Before Every Ride)
Get in the habit of a quick 30-second check before you ride:
- Tyre pressure: Squeeze the tyre — it should feel firm. Check with a gauge weekly (see tyre section below)
- Battery level: Make sure you have enough charge for your ride plus a 20% reserve
- Pedal bolts: Give the pedals a wiggle — they should be firm with no play. Tighten if loose
- Lights: Check headlight and tail light are working, especially for dusk or night rides
- Shell: Look for new cracks or damage, especially around the axle area
Tyre Pressure & Care
Tyre pressure is the most important maintenance item. It affects everything — handling, range, comfort, and safety.
Recommended Pressure
- Street / commuting: 35–45 PSI (depending on rider weight and tyre width)
- Off-road / trails: 25–35 PSI (lower for more grip, higher for less rolling resistance)
- Lighter riders (<70 kg): Use the lower end of the range
- Heavier riders (>90 kg): Use the higher end of the range
Check the sidewall of your tyre for the manufacturer's recommended pressure range and stay within it. Use a bike pump with a pressure gauge — digital gauges are most accurate.
When to Replace Your Tyre
- Tread depth is worn below 1.5mm (most EUC tyres have wear indicators)
- Visible cracks, cuts, or bulges in the sidewall
- Frequent punctures (inner tube may be worn)
- Typically every 2,000–5,000 km depending on riding style and tyre compound
Tyre changes on EUCs are more involved than a bicycle — they require disassembling part of the shell. We offer professional tyre change service if you'd prefer not to do it yourself.
Battery Care & Charging
The battery is the most expensive component in your EUC. Proper care extends its lifespan significantly.
Charging Best Practices
- Don't charge to 100% every time — charging to 80–90% extends battery life. Most EUC apps let you set a charge limit
- Don't drain below 10% — deep discharges stress lithium cells. Aim to charge when you hit 20–30%
- Charge at room temperature — avoid charging immediately after a hot ride or in cold conditions. Let the wheel cool down first
- Use the included charger — aftermarket fast chargers are fine, but make sure they match your wheel's voltage and connector
- Unplug when done — don't leave the wheel on the charger for days. Overnight charging is fine
Long-Term Storage
If you're not riding for a few weeks:
- Charge the battery to 50–60% before storing
- Store in a cool, dry place (not in direct sun or a hot garage)
- Check and top up the charge every 4–6 weeks — lithium batteries slowly self-discharge
- Never store a fully depleted battery — it can permanently damage cells
Battery Lifespan
Most EUC batteries last 500–1,000 charge cycles before capacity drops noticeably (to ~80% of original). With daily commuter use, that's roughly 3–5 years. Occasional riders may get 5–8 years. When capacity drops below 70%, it's time for a battery replacement or rebuild.
Cleaning Your EUC
- Wipe down after wet rides — use a damp cloth to remove mud, road salt, and grime. Dry thoroughly
- Never pressure wash — high-pressure water forces moisture into seals and electronics
- Clean the pedals — grip tape collects dirt. Scrub with a stiff brush and soapy water
- Clean the charging port — blow out dust with compressed air. A dirty port can cause charging issues
- Lubricate the trolley handle — if your wheel has one, a drop of silicone lubricant keeps it smooth
Firmware Updates
Manufacturers release firmware updates that can improve performance, fix bugs, and add features. Check for updates through your wheel's companion app:
- InMotion: InMotion app (iOS/Android)
- Begode: Begode app or via Bluetooth module
- KingSong: KingSong app
- Leaperkim: Check community forums for updates
Tip: Read the community forums before updating — occasionally a firmware update introduces new bugs. Wait a few days after release and check for reports before applying.
Bearing & Motor Maintenance
The motor and bearings in an EUC are sealed and generally maintenance-free. However:
- Listen for grinding or clicking — unusual sounds from the motor area could indicate a worn bearing
- Check for axle play — grab the wheel and try to rock it side-to-side. Any wobble means the bearings need attention
- Bearings typically last 10,000–20,000 km — more if you ride on smooth roads, less if you ride off-road
- Bearing replacement requires disassembly — this is a job for a professional. Book a service if you suspect bearing issues
Suspension Maintenance
If your wheel has suspension:
- Air suspension: Check air pressure monthly (uses a shock pump, not a tyre pump). Wipe the stanchion clean regularly
- Spring suspension: Check for oil leaks around the damper. Springs don't need regular maintenance
- Service interval: Every 5,000–10,000 km or annually, whichever comes first. A suspension service includes seal replacement, oil change, and inspection

When to Get Professional Help
Some things are best left to professionals:
- Tyre changes (requires shell disassembly)
- Battery issues (cell replacement, BMS problems)
- Motor or controller diagnosis
- Bearing replacement
- Suspension rebuild / service
- Any electrical fault (water damage, short circuits)
